I am often looking for new ways to create unique and personal spaces in my home. I view my home like a canvas. It can always be given fresh life. Whether it’s a large scale renovation or just a new personal touch, there are a plethora of ways to experiment and breathe new energy into our spaces. I just completed a relatively simple project that I am using to freshen up our bedroom. I painted our room back in November and have been looking for a number of ways to continue in its transformation. Adding this DIY privacy screen has been a fun way to create that uniqueness this room was craving.

This privacy screen was a new type of project for me. I’ve never DIY’ed anything like it before so it called for a bit of maneuvering to get it right. This screen originally started out as a trifold picture display. I found it while out on an early morning walk on our garbage pickup day. I had been having a sleepless night and instead of laying in bed drowning in my own thoughts, I decided that taking Charlie on a walk would make for a better use of my time. Thankfully I wasn’t far from home when I saw this piece. I was able to carry it back easily enough, and while I didn’t know my plans for it just yet, I felt it was worth bringing with me while I pondered ideas for it. Here is a look at the before:

After a few days of thinking of some possibilities, I decided that creating a privacy screen of sorts would be great to try. I’ve always loved the idea of them and find them quite charming. I figured it could make an interesting addition to our home. It would be a modern twist on an old idea and bring some character with it.

I am currently running low on paint supplies, so I used whatever paint I had extra for this project. I tried a charcoal chalk paint to begin with. I initially liked it. That is, until I added the fabric that I had picked out at JoAnn Fabrics (I cut it to size and hot glued it to the back). It suddenly felt too modern. I then tried a light beige, but my beige supply was extremely minimal, and I wasn’t fond enough of the color to pursue getting any more. That’s when I had the idea to try the paint color I used for our bedroom: black fox by Sherwin Williams. It is a rich, dark brown that I have truly enjoyed in our room. I painted it in the leftover semi-gloss used for the trim. It still gave the contrast that I desired but added a bit more of the warmth that the charcoal lacked. With the added layers of paint, it gave more of that aged look that I appreciate so much as well.

Now, I have a one-of-a-kind piece. I don’t know if it will stay in our room or not. I am constantly moving things around as it is to freshen up our rooms without the need to purchase new items. But for now, I am enjoying the change in here, and only time will tell if it will stay in here for the long run. I may continue to tweak it over time to get it exactly how I want it. But that is the beauty of making and creating things yourself. You can continue to experiment and adjust things until you have precisely what you’ve been looking for.
I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing this unique DIY project. And I hope it inspires you to try something new in your home as well. Thank you for being here and following along in our journey of home. It means so much to me. Stay blessed!

We like what you did with. We have one also, might have to try and do something similar.
How neat!!
