What a beautiful autumn day. It’s one of those days where the sun feels a little brighter, the colors feel a little more vibrant, and my house feels a little more homey. The deeper into fall we go, the cozier my home feels. And the same can be said for antiques. The more antiques I add, the cozier it feels as well. I wanted to share a beautiful new antique that I just added to my home a couple weeks back. It is a stunning office chair that I found at the least likely time and place. And now it’s the perfect match to fit the style of this room.
Ryan and I recently took a weekend getaway up north to visit my sister and brother-in-law. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon when we decided to head out to lunch at a restaurant on the water. We happened to drive past a garage sale on our way into town. As we were passing, I spotted this chair from a distance and was immediately drawn to its classic design. Thank goodness for a brother-in-law who turned us around to go take a look! I could tell that the chair was rather old. It was a piece that was crafted by Gregory, Mayer, and Thom Co. in Detroit many decades ago. You could see the years this piece had endured with all the wear and scratches. And its character was just another reason to love it.
With no price on it, I made an inquiry and in turn was asked what I would offer. I offered $10/$15, hoping that I wouldn’t offend the seller but with the desire of getting a good deal. Thankfully, the seller was not only not offended, but he gave me the chair for the lower price. To be honest, I was rather surprised. After some brief conversation with the couple, we learned that they had just moved up there and previously lived only 15 minutes away from us! The chair belonged to his grandfather, and he was happy to see it go to a new home where it would be loved and respected. We all thought it was rather ironic that they had just lugged this piece up there only for it to come right back down here- haha!
I walked away from that sale with more than just a lovely new piece at a great price. I had been searching for the right office chair for quite some time, and this one fit every detail I was looking for. It all seemed to happen “by chance” that day, as if this piece was meant to be mine. A very sweet friend of mine recently reminded me that God is in the details. And while finding an antique chair for our office seems “insignificant”, the fact that He was in the details was really highlighted to me. Even something as simple as this can be an opportunity to just sit back, smile, and be grateful for the little ways we are blessed all the time. And this blessing happened over a wonderful time with family. I couldn’t ask for more than that. I hope you are having a great start to this month, and thank you for being here!
