Oh, September. You have graced us so beautifully with your presence. The cooling temperatures and the changing of the leaves always mean the start of my favorite time of year. Especially when it comes to my home. Doesn’t everything just feel comfier? It always inspires me to take things to the next level with my spaces, even when the projects are minuscule in nature. For example, I recently did a small makeover on a shelf that I’ve had for quite some time now. This shelf makeover may not be a glamorous or in-depth project, but it just goes to show how much a little bit of paint can elevate a space in a short amount of time.
I’ve had this shelf for a number of years. It was originally a grey stained wooden shelf that I had just fallen out of love with. During my “let’s paint everything white” phase, I did just that…painted it white. But over the years, I had fallen out of love with it again. I craved something more eye-catching. So I did what I do best: I painted it. The new color is Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black. I also removed the hooks and sprayed them in Krylon’s Metallic Gold spray paint to give a beautiful, crisp contrast to the black. And now it has less of the farmhouse aesthetic and more of a classic design feel to it. I love the combination of black and brass on this farmhouse style shelf. It just lends itself so well to this space and brought it to life once more. A bit casual, a bit classic. I love the juxtaposition of those two design elements. Here is the “before” photo (Sorry for the poor quality, the lighting wasn’t the best for photographing that day ha!).
This shelf makeover may not be the most impressive DIY on the internet these days. But it serves as a great reminder of all the little ways we can change our homes over the years. I have a habit of consistently doing small, tangible DIY projects to simple little pieces. And over time, those small projects can lead to a bigger overall design change. When you feel like you don’t have the budget to do major renovations or enhancements to your home, take a look around and see what little changes you can make. Is there anything that a can of spray paint or a sample pot of paint can transform? I use cheap sample pots from Lowes on a regular basis to do small makeovers like this…and for only $5-$6. This time, I used leftover paint from another project and used spray paint I had sitting in my storage closet to change the hooks. I like to think of it as simply being resourceful.
So, if you’ve been feeling a little nudge to change up a space, consider starting with something small and accessible. Even changing the color of a vase, a photo frame, or a knick-knack could be just what you need to spring new life into your spaces. I hope you are enjoying this beautiful September weather, and thank you, as always, for being here!

I love all your posts; especially this one. Such simple things that can change the atmosphere of a room. I never think of these things. If it were not for your posts, it would remain the same “forever”. I do, however, like to change the furniture arrangement around now and then. Sometimes more often than others. Once again, thank you for this post. I am now living in an apartment at Centerburg Place, in Centerburg, OH. The Ohio Trail is in my backyard!

Thank you so much, and I am so glad that this has been an inspiration to you! I find that some of my favorite changes in my home are the ones that are the simplest. You never know how much of an impact the little things can make, especially over time! And changing furniture around is such a fantastic way to freshen up a room too! Thanks for your sweet compliments, Pam!
