Happy September! It feels good to be back. I took an impromptu break from blogging over the summer, one that was very much needed. It’s been a difficult summer in many regards, and I am eager to begin a new season (in more ways than one). That said, I am certainly excited to be back and see what this new season brings. And thankfully for me, autumn happens to be my favorite. I look forward to taking those long autumn drives with Ryan out in the country, drinking as much pumpkin spice coffee as my heart can handle, and soaking up all of the beauty that this season offers to us. And one of my favorite ways to welcome the changing of the season is to begin my fall decorating. So today I am welcoming in the first day of September with some subtle fall decor in our guest room.
I know that for some, decorating this early is not all that enticing. You want to soak up those last lingering days of summer. For others, like me, you have been as giddy as a schoolgirl waiting to pull out all of your fall decor and drench your home with fall scented fragrances. For me, that wait is finally over. Pulling out my fall decor for the first time reminds me of the anticipation that we had as children as my mom began to pull out all of her fall decor. Fall was like magic in our home growing up. I could write a book about it (and actually, my dream is to write/photograph my own fall-themed book one day). Every year I anxiously await getting to do the same in my home. This year, I’ve started by adding some simple fall decor in our guest room. I simply love the view that I see when I sit in my own room and look across the hall to see those pops of color and the added warmth and texture that these fall accents bring.
Usually at the beginning of September, I like to start adding in the autumn feel in subtle ways and not start off with full fall color. These fall stems are some of my favorite to add every year because they are more “transitional” than leaves with full blown color. They have a good mixture of the orange and green, which feels more natural this time of year. Here, our trees and our neighbor’s trees are starting to see the beginnings of their shades of yellow, red, and orange for the season and these faux stems replicate that perfectly. These are from Hobby Lobby, and are a perfect addition for the coming autumn… especially if you want to start some decorating, but are still hesitant about it feeling too much like October yet.
Another easy and subtle way to add in fall decor is blankets. Fall is all about adding in those cozy tones and textures. Thick, wool blankets or cable knit throws are a simple way to instantly make any space feel cozy. I’m now bringing out all of my orange and brown toned blankets, as well as all of my plaids. I throw them on all the beds, chairs, and hang them on the walls. Hanging a warm-toned or textured fall blanket on a hook brings so much comfort to a space. It is an easy way to “dress-up” a bare spot on a wall and bring in those fall accents without having to add a lot. It’s subtle, yet makes any space instantly feel warmer. I used one of my favorites in here that I found at a market a few years back. Adding layers of these blankets in big baskets is also a perfectly easy way to add that extra cozy factor as well.
The last thing I did in this space to begin my fall decor was to add candles and copper. Nothing says fall quite like delicious smelling candles and the soft glow of light that they bring. The soft bouncing of light beckons us to sit down, cuddle up, and enjoy the comforts that this season brings. And as a tip, adding in copper accents enhances that. Light bounces off of shiny metallics, especially with the warm metallics in copper. It can almost give off the illusion of candle light itself. So add some candles next to those copper accents and you will really start to “feel the cozy”. Seeing the glow of candles in the reflection of the copper in the evenings brings added warmth on a chilly autumn night.
I hope that these tips help you as you begin to (or prepare to) start bringing some fall decorating into your homes. Fall has always been my favorite season, and I can’t wait to get decorating and enjoying all that this season has to offer. Thank you being back here with me this season and happy decorating!

I enjoyed reading/seeing this, Jill. I may get motivated soon, too!! (Although you know, I’m a ‘summer lover’.) I do like this look; just enough to begin the season, as you mentioned. And, to you, ENJOY FALL!! 🙂
