I love lilacs. Their fragrance, variations of purple, and simplicity make them such happy little flowers. The only sad part about lilacs is their short life span. I went to Traverse City over the weekend for some sister time, and because they bloomed a little early this year, I was hoping that these beauties wouldn’t be on their way out before I got home. Thankfully they still had some life in them, and I was able to cut some to have in my home. They are no longer that vibrant purple, but the faded purple is still gorgeous too. Lilacs make such a cheerful centerpiece, and I thought I would share some photos before they are gone all too quickly.
I cut these lilacs in the morning which is supposed to help them retain moisture, thereby keeping them fresh longer. After cutting at a 45 degree angle, I took my pruning shears and smashed the end of the stems. According to my google search, it is the best way to allow the stems to absorb the proper amount of water that they need. If you’ve ever brought fresh cut lilacs into your home, you know how quickly they wilt. I learned that the hard way last year. I am hoping that implementing these tips will keep them fresh longer than two days this time! Do you have any tips for keeping lilacs fresh longer? I would love to hear!
To style them, I took a short vase, filled it with water, and kept the stems long. I placed the lilacs into the short vase and then placed it into this basket. It allows me to get that cottage style that I love so much. I will continue to cut down the lilacs as needed, but starting them tall allows me to trim down slowly and keep them in this basket a long as I can.
I hope these cheerful flowers brought some joy to your day. And if you have any more tips about keeping these beauties fresh longer indoors, leave them in the comments below! I’m sure we all could use some more advice when it comes to our fresh cut flowers this spring and summer. Thanks for stopping by!

I absolutely love this photo. I wish I could smell it….I can in my mind! When I was very young we lived in Detroit, on Maddelein and our neighbor had Lilac bushes that grew right through the fence into our yard. I loved to bring them in the house for the wonderful smell. I would also stay outside on the weekends just smelling them !! What a fantastic memory. Thank you so much for sharing.

I just love this! If anything I share brings back fond memories for others, then that makes me happier than anything else! I’m so glad this brought back such great memories. And you are right, the fragrance is just amazing!
