Breakfast nooks are some of my favorite design elements of older homes. While newer homes are going toward large and open spaces, my heart is still drawn to the quaintness of these smaller, cozy spaces. And our breakfast nook is no exception. In fact, this space was one of the selling points for me in this house. When we first moved in, this nook was an empty, bland shell with a whole lot of potential. Over the last few years, it has become quite the gem. With these latest antique additions, I love this nook even more. These antique bentwood chairs are the perfect addition in here, and they add that beautiful historic charm that I love and adore so much.
I love old chairs. They pique my interest and curiosity about their extensive past. When I think of chairs with history, I always wonder about those who would gather around the table with them. If these chairs could speak, what kind of stories would they tell? How many people gathered together sitting on these chairs and how many intriguing conversations were held around them? How many times were they used as places to sit and talk about joyous occasions and how many times were they places to rest for grieving or tired hearts? While I will never know, I like to imagine people gathered together and discussing their everyday lives or those times and events that we only read about in our history books. When it comes to these turn of the century chairs that now sit in my home, I love to imagine the stories of their past and look forward to the stories of their future here in our breakfast nook.
I’ve loved the look of bentwood (or bistro) chairs for a long time. Newly constructed bentwood chairs are easy to purchase. I had debated purchasing some new ones before, but they just aren’t the same, and I really wanted genuine antique ones. I finally found them and purchased 4 of them from my favorite antique shop (The Lamb’s Tail). Two had been painted black and two were still in the original stain. Since I love both stained and painted furniture, I thought having two of each would fit in to my home’s style with ease. I couldn’t be more thrilled with how they look in this space. And even more, I love that they will continue their stories here around our little table.
Thankfully, these antique chairs are still solid. They are sturdy pieces that are lightweight and stunning in design. They remind me of chairs you would see in a European cafe… after all, the style was created in Vienna in the 1800s. I guess I can now enjoy my morning coffee while pretending I’m in Europe. A girl can dream, right?
Thanks for stopping by and checking out my latest antique finds. Have any great antiques you’ve found recently? Or favorite antiques you’ve had for a while? Or maybe some antiques you’ve been on the hunt for? I’d love to hear! Thank you always for being here!
