The family room is my favorite room of our home. When we bought this house, it was the scariest. The peachy toned wood paneling was falling apart (it looked almost purple in some lighting), the floor was 1″ square greenish/ grey tiles, and the fireplace was a 1960s brown and purple toned brick. There are a million other things I could write, but I’ll spare you those details. Now, though, it has become a little retreat in the back of our house. With the darker, warm colors it feels so much more inviting and relaxing. I love it the most at Christmas. It’s where we love to enjoy our holiday movie favorites, hot chocolate, cozy blankets, and the warmth of the fire. As I was working in here earlier, I thought I would snap a few pictures and show you a little of this room decked out for the holidays. The lighting is not the best in here and so photographing it can be a challenge, but I hope you will still enjoy seeing a glimpse of this room decorated for Christmas.
The first thing I have to decide every year is where to place the tree. Now, this room isn’t that big. It’s long and thin, which meant I needed to find a thin tree if I wanted to have one in here (and naturally, I did!). I found this one at Hobby Lobby, and it fits rather well in here. Normally each year I place it on the other side of the door wall, but this year I wanted to try something different. I wanted to see how well it would look here in this corner. And actually, I love it. It makes for a nice transition from the dining room into this one.
Now, you may notice how simple this one is compared to my living room tree. That main tree is the only one I go all out for. This one stays fairly simplistic every year. This tree gets some pearly toned bulbs, some brown ones, a few small gold ones, and some ribbon. I used the same ribbon I used on my gift wrapping. That is an easy way to tie your gift wrap and tree together for a really cohesive look. The ribbon I tied into simple bows and just placed them throughout the tree. And truthfully, this is all ribbon I had left over from last year. I would really love to add some more of the bows, but I haven’t been able to get to the store to pick up any more.
To be honest, I haven’t purchased one gift for Christmas yet. No, not one. It is 2020 after all. To hold me over until I actually make it out shopping this year, I just wrapped a few empty boxes we had with wrapping paper I had left over from last year. Have you noticed a pattern yet? Taking advantage of all those “leftovers” from previous years is cost effective and helps to add those extra festive touches when you need them.
Opposite to the corner of the tree is our entertainment center. I have mentioned this before, but this is a corner hutch that I picked up at an antique store a few years back. All we needed to do to convert this was to cut out a shelf in the middle and drill a hole in the back. I love this piece so much. And yes, I should have moved those cords so you couldn’t see them, but I guess this is just real life ha! To decorate this corner, I took a small garland I had and just wrapped it around the top and edges of the hutch. I placed some battery powered lights in the garland to enjoy a little extra glow while we are watching our favorite Christmas movies. On the top shelf, I just placed a couple mini trees and a sweet canvas print of our favorite santa with Charlie as a pup. And actually, that photo was taken during our first Christmas season in this house. The tree in the photo is the tree that is in here currently.
The rest of the room is really simple. On the coffee table, I placed some greenery stems in some nostalgic looking canisters. And on the two couches, I have some cozy, oversized sweater pillows and some rustic woodland pillows. I would show you a picture of the fireplace if it was complete. We have a mantle but it is not up yet. I was hoping to have it up and decorated by Christmas, but I don’t think we will be able to get it done before then. Again, 2020.
I should also note, I found some semi-matching ornaments to that canvas above the sofa at Bronner’s Christmas store in Frankenmuth. I like to add fun Christmas details that coordinate with other elements in the room. The details are always what make Christmas fun to me.
I hope you enjoyed this quick little tour of our family room decked out for the holidays. There is nothing elaborate in this room, and yet it is still my favorite. It’s a tiny, cozy space that we love so much. It’s not fancy, it’s not finished, and it’s still our favorite place to enjoy the fun of the season. I hope you are having a blessed holiday season. Thank you so much for stopping by today.

I have to agree with you. This is my favorite room. It is absolutely fabulous! I would probably spend most of my day in that room. You were certainly blessed with a fantastic gift. I hope you are able to
use your talents to earn some money. If I were younger and living in one of the Parsonages we used to live in I would definitely hire you !!
