It always amazes me how quickly the holiday season goes by. The anticipation leading up to the holidays can be so exciting, and yet, it is gone in a flash. I don’t know about you, but I enjoy the Christmas season far more than I enjoy the big day itself. I enjoy reminiscing about days gone by and what the future holds. I enjoy those family holiday traditions and snuggling up with a cup of hot cocoa while enjoying the glow of the Christmas tree. This year, we get to enjoy the glow of the tree in our newly refinished master bedroom. I put a tree in here every year, but this year is a little different. We’ve had the floors refinished, replaced all of the baseboards, added a new door, and changed out the drapes and rug. It has a completely new feel, and I am loving every minute of it. It’s a slightly “elevated” feel, and curling up and watching my favorite Christmas films in our new space has felt like a beautiful blessing after a year that has been so challenging.
A couple months back, we were sleeping in the basement… surrounded by piles and piles of our belongings. The prep, process, and finishing work that we had to do before the floors could be done in the bedroom spaces felt daunting. We hired out for the floors, but we still had to rip out all of the existing baseboards, interior and closet doors, paint the existing door trim and all the new baseboards, paint the closets, fix and paint the ceilings, move everything down into the basement, and move into the basement for several weeks as work began on our floors. This had to be done on this entire half of the house. Not an easy (or fun) project that took working from morning until night for 4 weeks. We had been working on the demo and now the refinishing since the beginning of October. And now that that project is finally coming to an end (we still have to finish painting and installing all the new doors), it is finally time to enjoy the break from the heavy work and enjoy what this space has become. And now that the holidays are here, we get to enjoy it in the height of the season.
Every year in our room, I add an older tree in here and decorate it as our “memory tree”. This year, however, I decided to go a different route. I decided to bring the family room tree in here and move the memory tree into our family room. With the newly refinished floors, the new velvet drapes, and the new rug, this room felt a little too nice to keep that older tree in here. So I brought in this one and decorated it in pearls and blush and gold ornaments to match the blush tones in the new rug. I still kept it simple, but wanted the space to feel a little more “mature” than it had in previous years. You could describe it as more of a casual elegance. And I absolutely love it. It almost has an older style romanticism to it with the subtle hues of pink.
On our dresser I added this sweet little Christmas village set that I had painted last year. I wrote a post about that DIY project here. To get that extra cozy factor, I also layered some plaid blankets on the bed. Layering creates a more cozy environment. The added layers on the bed are a welcoming sign to hang out in your favorite comfy clothes and enjoy your favorite holiday movies by the light of the tree.
This room has certainly come a long way from what it used to be. The more we change it, the more we love it. And I think we are getting more comfortable with bolder accents. The bolder it gets, the bolder I want to go. We’ve discussed adding wainscoting, darker paint colors, and even wooden beams to the ceiling. All projects for another time. In the meantime, we are finally in a place to really enjoy the benefits of the hard work we have poured into this room over the last several months. And what better time to enjoy it than Christmas. Thank you for stopping by today, and I hope this holiday season is bringing you much joy and peace.
